What is the CARE Center, and how does it work?

The CARE Center is Roddenbery Memorial Library's answer to the community's need for more information on cancer. The name CARE Center stands for Cancer Awareness Resource Environment--a quiet, private place to find help. The help that the CARE Center offers is for those who have been diagnosed with cancer or their family members, who want to find out more about the disease itself, do research to make more informed choices about treatment options, or find out more about caregivers and their services.

The center also offers a variety of information on cancer prevention, early detection, and advocacy--taking up the fight against cancer. Made possible in part by a grant from the American Cancer Society, the CARE center features many of the resources that the Society provides. The American Cancer Society web page and hotline number are available through the center, as well as information on the many American Cancer Society programs offered.

Other resources include relatively secluded internet access, pamphlets, medical journals, reference books, circulating books, videos, and audio books. Information is available in Spanish. The Care Center is actually a network of resources putting people in touch with the knowledge and the people that can help them. In some cases it can become a network for people with the same needs through support programs or prevention training.
